What makes a green product?

At Earth Alive, we believe in “Cradle-to-Grave” analysis, a technique that examines a product throughout its entire life cycle.

A lot of so-called green or environmentally friendly products have “cleaned up their act” in one small area, like packaging. Many of these “greenwashed” products are just dressing up the same old harsh chemicals in a new set of clothes. From a cradle-to-grave perspective, “slightly less harmful” would be a more accurate label for most of them.

Not Earth Alive. Our product is fundamentally different, truly green, and actually beneficial for the environment on disposal.

Step 1: Raw Materials
The product is so green, it's actually brown!
Hold Earth Alive in your hand – go ahead, no need for gloves. It’s the color of the earth. It looks and feels natural because it is. Yes, we use organic, natural, renewable ingredients. But we go further, deriving our patented surfactant from a foresty industry byproduct. That means no new resources are used and not a single tree cut. The other ingredients, living microbes, are entirely renewable and produced in a lab from existing all-vegetative cultures. It’s hard to imagine ingredients more respectful of the earth’s natural resources.

Step 2: Transport
Attack your carbon footprint!
Earth Alive is incredibly concentrated – just 3g per liter of water for general cleaning. And our main ingredient – a recycled forestry industry byproduct – is concentrated on site and shipped to us dry. Using concentrated powders allows us to slash emissions throughout our supply chain. And Earth Alive is so versatile it replaces numerous products and helps you consolidate suppliers, further reducing your company’s carbon footprint.

Step 3: Manufacturing
0 emissions. No waste water.
When you choose Earth Alive powder, you choose a product made by blending three different powders in an industrial blender: a totally enclosed environment. That means 0 emissions and no grey water from our manufacturing process.

Step 4: Packaging
The best packaging is no packaging!
Earth Alive’s ultraconcentrated powder cuts packaging to a bare minimum. Filling your reuseable spray bottle with Earth Alive powder and cold water is the most environmentally friendly way to get a powerful green cleaner into your hands, bar none. You’ll be amazed how long a single bucket of Earth Alive lasts.

Of course we also use recycled materials for our labels and packaging: recycled packaging for a “recycled” product.

Step 5: Use
Just add cold water!
Start using Earth Alive and you’ll immediately see the environmental benefits. Using cold water saves energy and reduces your company’s carbon footprint. Replacing multiple products with one cuts down on natural resource use and transportation. And Earth Alive’s microbial action actually cleans out your cloths and mop heads, extending their service life.
Unlike chemical products, you can release Earth Alive back into the environment after use with a clean conscience– it’s actually beneficial.

Step 6: Disposal
Actually beneficial!
When it comes to disposal, Earth Alive is truly in a class of its own. Putting Earth Alive’s microbes back into the environment after use is actually beneficial, because they boost soil quality and clean water. Not only do they break down and digest (instead of just dispersing) dirt and grime, they actually help restore the environment’s natural balance.

Reducing toxic chemical use is all well and good. But why not cut out toxic chemicals altogether, with an all-natural, organic product that actually nourishes the environment. It’s time.

Product Content and Use

Minimal presence of or exposure to potentially harmful chemicals, such as:
- Corrosive or strongly irritating substances
- Substances classified as known or likely human carcinogens or reproductive toxicants by authorities such as the National Toxicology Program, the U.S. EPA, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, or the State of California
- Ozone-depleting compounds as listed in Clean Air Act regulations
- Regulated hazardous materials (e.g., products classified as hazardous waste; products that trigger OSHA hazard communication requirements)
Use of renewable resources, such as biobased solvents from citrus, seed, vegetable and pine oils
Low VOC content
Biodegradable by standard methods and definitions
Low toxicity in aquatic species such as fish and aquatic invertebrates, e.g., LC50 or EC50 > 10 mg/L (chronic) reported on MSDS or other product literature
Low flammability, e.g., flash point > 200°F
Designed for use in cold water in order to conserve energy
Limit use of disinfectants to areas where people are likely to come into contact with contaminated surfaces (e.g., bathroom fixtures, doorknobs, other high-touch surfaces). Many general purpose cleaning tasks do not typically require the use of disinfectants (e.g., walls, floors, other surfaces with minimal hand contact).
